My mom was talking to me today for the longest time about wanting me to change my major. She thinks that a graphic design major would be too hard for me to find a job after college and that’s the only reason why she wants me to change. Like she’s a pretty good representation of a stereotypical asian mom who wants their kid, me, to find a job in the health field or in law.
I don’t like adhering to stereotypes at all. In fact, I purposefully took Art as my high school elective course my freshman year to spite my parents. Before then, I had no interests in art or anything for that matter. It was good thing I ended up loving art.
Anyways, she spent the entire day reading the PSU Bulletin (which is a gigantic book detailing all the schools majors, requirements and courses). She was comparing the courses that I have taken with possible majors and minors I could change to. So one choice was that I could change my major to Political Science given the number of history and polisci credits I have now, or with the 28 credits of physics I could minor in that while keeping Graphic Design as the major.
Both options aren’t appealing at all. I don’t want to do political science and I don’t like physics anymore. I understand that she’s only looking out for me and helping me gain an advantage in the job market post graduation, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I don’t want to spend time studying something I don’t like at all just for the possible job that will be available.
What really pissed me off was she was saying how the graphic design major was becoming a trendy fad that a lot of students are taking post high school graduation. I don’t know where she got this idea but all I know is, I’m the only student out of my graduating class doing this major. No one in my class is anywhere near art. Same goes for my sister’s graduating class. Sometimes my mom likes to pull fake statistics out of thin air to justify her position.
